8 Tips on Joining a Gym

January is a great time to join or try a gym out. You might be ready for something different or have new resolutions to get fit. Typically in January, gyms are running specials such as no join fees so it is a great time to go visit some gyms. You might even find that joining a yoga studio, spin studio, rockclimbing gym, aquatic center, crossfit, Louisville Turners, or just hiring a specific coach is a better fit than your standard gym. There are lots of unique fitness centers here in Louisville so you are sure to find something that fits your niche.

I am no expert in joining gyms, but having researched and joined several in my lifetime by answering these 8 questions has helped me to find places that suited me. Hopefully it will help you out too!

  1. What type of fitness do you like to do? Cardio, swimming, classes, free weights etc? If you do not like to swim or take classes no need to have a gym with those extras, right? Or if you just like classes, belonging to a fitness studio might be more up your alley.
  2. Does the gym offer a free guest pass to try out before you buy or a first class is free? Great idea to see if you see yourself going there often before spending the money.
  3. Does the gym have hours that fit your schedule and your wallet? There are some gyms open 24 hours, no contracts, month to month. Be sure to see what is included in the basic membership: the classes, childcare, a free session with a personal training etc included?
  4. Is the location of the gym close enough to home or work? And if multiple locations do you have access to them all?
  5. Do you need childcare? Does the gym offer childcare when you can go to the gym? What is the price for using it?
  6. Does the equipment look new and clean? Sometimes a cheaper gym may have older or poorly maintained equipment.
  7. Are the personal trainers or instructors certified through an accredited organization? Always good to know, the people working you out know what they are doing.
  8. Is the gym going to be able to help you achieve your fitness goals?
Currently, I belong to the YMCA. At this stage in my life it is the best fit. It is very family friendly -my kids love going. Since I am a 'newbie' to sprint triathlons having an indoor pool makes it great for me to practice my weakest event year round. I recently met up with a wellness coach who helped me get started with weight training which is a foreign land to me. Previously I have belonged to places that had no classes or an indoor pool. It was much cheaper than the Y and at that stage in my life was a perfect fit.
So do your research and go visit some places. You will find the right fit for sure.

Right now you can join the Y with no join fee until mid January.

Fit with Friends: Relay Races, Multi-Day Bike Rides

And like that, it is post Christmas.... Hope you had a great time with family and friends celebrating and catching up!

Why not recruit your friends and sign up for a relay race or a multi-day bike ride?! It is a great way to hang out with your friends while getting your FIT IN! Bonus you can hold each for accountability to start the year off.

Here are some nearbyish events that might peak your interest:

Sub-9 Death March-Norman, IN (March 9)Team mountain bike race with check points. Includes a parent/youth division

Dances with Dirt - Gnaw Bone, Indiana (May 10) - 50mile relay - 5 person relay team

Bike MS: Bluegrass, Bikes, and Bourbon - Shelbyville, Kentucky (May 17-18) - Bike 40-100miles/day

Ragnar Races - Chicago (June 6-7), Tennessee (TBA)- "Ragnar is the overnight running relay race that makes testing your limits a team sport."You and 11 of your craziest friends (or 5 of your crazier friends for an ultra team) pile into two vans and tag team running 200(ish) miles, day and night, relay-style. Only one runner hits the road at a time. Each participant runs three times, with each leg ranging between 3-8 miles and varying in difficulty. So, from the elite runner down to the novice jogger, it's the perfect race for anyone."

Red Eye Relay - Bloomington, Indiana (July 19-20) - "The Red Eye Relay is an all-nighter 50 or 100 miles relay. It’s a ridiculous challenge that brings teams of runners a step away from the average run, a race that adds sleep deprivation to the already difficult task of running multiple races in one night. What goes together better than running yourself silly and staying up all night? Well, maybe peanut butter and jelly, but what the heck? The fun starts on a Saturday evening at the Upland Brewing Co. Bloomington Brew Pub (350 W. 11th St., Bloomington, IN). From there, goofballs get giddier as the course winds through some of the hilliest terrain that the midwest has to offer before a grand finale finish on Sunday morning back at the brewery."

Tri6, Tri12, Tri24 - Batavia, OH (Aug. 16) - TRI24 is the ultimate Multi-Sport experience. Athletes compete in a 24, 12 or 6 hour looping sprint course.

Tour De Upland - Nashville, Indiana (Aug.15-17 )"30 hours of cycling (road and mountain bike routes), beer, camping, and music in Nashville, IN. Plus the toughest Century in Indiana."

Bike Trek to Shakertown - (Sept.13-15) Supporst American Lung Association - 2-3 day bike ride through Kentucky

Bourbon Chase - Kentucky (Oct. 10-11) - A 200mile relay race through Bourbon Country.
Lottery registration starts Jan 2.

Hilly Hundred - Indiana (Oct. 10-12) - "If you like a bicycling challenge that includes entertainment and fellowship with more than 5,000 cyclists from over 40 states and several foreign countries, the Hilly is for you. This three day event (with two days of riding approximately 50 miles each day) is held in the scenic hills of southern  Indiana."

Many triathlons and marathons include relays in their races too so if these above don't fit the bill check out some local tris and marathons!

TBA -
Back on my Feet - Indianapolis - 42K relay around White River State Park
Rockin' Marathon - Iroquois Park, Kentucky - 26.1m relay

If you are up to traveling to Tennessee area - check out Running in the USA website for Relays HERE

Adventures races and other non-typical road races  are great team or social races as well.

Trapeze Workshop - Louisville Turners

Out-of-the-Box Fitness
I am runner. Okay, more of a social jogger, but that is what I know and love. I am comfortable in my running shoes and shorts.  I enjoy the variety of runners at races. I know what to expect. I get excited picking out new, unique races that motivate me to keep training.  That is exactly the reason I checked out the trapeze workshop at Louisville Turners  recently. It was time to step out-of-my comfort zone into something different that would work my body out in a totally new way.

I found out about the drop-in trapeze workshop on their facebook page It said no trapeze experienced needed and was a nice workout prior to all the upcoming festival food - all that applied to me. Having my third baby 15 months ago and only picked up running again routinely about 7 months ago, I knew it was going to be challenging. However, I was hoping that the fun element would carry me through the workout.

So after a pep talk from my husband to calm my nerves, I drove off to my first circus class. I arrived several minutes early at  Louisville Turners on River Road near Zorn not knowing truly what to expect. Fortunately, I saw a mom and daughter walking to the building as I did not see any ‘Enter Here’ signs. The entrance is to the left of the parking lot towards the river, under the building. Once in the building the signs direct you up to the 3rd floor for Louisville Turners. I saw a handful of people taking classes and talking, but I was not for sure who worked here. So I sat down and watched the kids’ static trapeze class. Once the class ended, a few more people showed up and I asked one of them about the trapeze class, and they introduced me to the instructor, Clayton. He had traveled with a circus for 8 years before settling back down in his hometown, here, so he knew what he was doing!

There were 3 students (including me) in the workshop. I was the only ‘newbie’ to the circus. The other two had silks and other training, but have not venture into the trapeze area. We started the class with 9min of cardio from the Insanity program followed by stretching and ab workout. It was go your own pace during this time and do as much as you can. In theory, each time you return, you would get stronger from the previous class.

My modified version vs. Meg's full version ab workout
Now we moved on to the fun part, but most difficult part - trapeze work. Clayton demonstrated several more core workouts using the trapeze bar. Fortunately, he showed me modified versions since I was not even close to doing the full blown versions of what he was showing. The other students were beasts who were super encouraging. You could tell they had more abdominal and upper body strength. They had been taking classes with Louisville Turners for about 2 years. It was cool to see how the classes have given them overall fitness and strength. Near the end, Clayton showed us how to get up on the bar and a few tricks. This was a highlight of the class, but also still very challenging.

Clayton demonstrating proper mounting on the bar.
Clayton was a great instructor. He made sure to assist you when needed to feel safe. The drop-in trapeze workshop is just a temporary offering - Monday/Thursdays through January 2. The kids class is at 5pm and the adults (13 and up) starts at 6pm. The cost is $15 for non-members - definitely worth the experience - how often do you get to take a class using a trapeze instructed by someone who toured with a circus!

The American Louisville Turners is hosting a Winter Showcase tonight, Friday Dec. 20 at 8pm - $10. It is a fundraiser for them and also gives you a chance to find more information on their aerial and circus classes for all ages and levels - which would also make great Christmas presents! That is how Meg got started with a gift of classes from her husband. It seemed like a tight knit community with lots of camaraderie - open to all levels - and an addictive, fun form of exercise.

If you are looking for a fun way to feel like you are not working out - check them out! By the way, I am definitely sore today!

Online Fitness Challenges

Here are some online challenges to Get your FIT IN! It doesn't matter whether you travel this month or stay home, these challenges can be done wherever you are! Why not grab a group of friends and make your own facebook group and challenge one another?
30 Day Fitness Challenges
"A 30 day fitness challenge is a great way to stay in shape, tone up your body, learn new exercise techniques and do something new and exciting each and every month." You can pick an area to work on such as your core or arms or take up the Little Black Dress challenge. You can do anything for just 30 days, right? Join in on their facebook page for more support.

30 Day Burpee Challenge
Spartan Race founder Joe De Sena made the world a simple challenge: do 30 burpees for 30 days. The only rule is that if you submit to the challenge, you must commit to the challenge. Will you take the challenge? No matter the date, start today!

2013 Runner's World Holiday Running Streak
Stay fit and motivated during the busy (and calorie-filled) holiday season by pledging to run at least one mile every day, Thanksgiving Day through New Year's Day. Yes it has already started, butLearn more about the streak here: http://bit.ly/1az2MO9 and chat with other streakers on Twitter using the hashtag #RWRunStreak here: http://bit.ly/1dbtap7

Voyage to Venus
Have you ever wanted to run in space? Now is your chance.  Moon Joggers is looking for 25,000 runners (walkers and joggers too) to join our challenge this year and help us run enough miles to get to Venus! We will donate a portion of each registration to our favorite charity: Little Heroes Foundation.  Our goal is $50,000!

30Day Challenge Series
Looking to build healthier habits and a happier life? This page is for you! Different challenges each month focus on improving fitness, diet and mindset. Take on one or all of them -- all in the name of improving your lifestyle.

100 days - "The 100 Days Challenge is a free motivational program to help you start your year of activity. It is all about inspiring intentional movement and a healthy, active, happy lifestyle." It is 30minutes of intentional moving for 100days. Check out their webpage or facebook page for more information. It was started by John 'Penguin' Bingham who I was fortunate enough hear speak one time. He calls himself an 'accidental athlete' and slower than mediocre runner, but he runs. He is a great motivator!
